Nu`u Mauka Excursion

Visit our Nu`u Mauka location and hike through a section of the most extensive dryland agricultural field system in the Kaupō Moku (district).

In pre-contact times, Kaupō was famous for its production of `uala, or sweet potato. `Uala was said to have been cultivated from sea level to as high as 3000 ft. elevation, and indeed, all the evidence for that cultivation is seen on this hike.

Additionally, the Nu`u Mauka hike takes guests past both ancient house sites and heiau (ceremonial sites) associated with this `uala cultivation.

Traversing the land at an approximate 1500 ft. elevation, guests have an opportunity to view both the coastline and the ridge-line of Haleakalā from a unique vantage point unfamiliar to many.

Private Snack Tours are available on Fridays for groups of up to 10 people. Additionally, this area can be added to a private Nu`u Makai Tour for an increased rate to create an all day excursion until 3:30 p.m. Please contact us directly at (808) 446-2227 to check for availability on this totally unique archaeological expedition.
